Disegnata da Giulia Archimede in collaborazione con il team di sviluppo prodotto di Catellani & Smith, Alchemie attinge dal più antico dei contrasti: luce contro buio, sole contro luna. Due dischi contrapposti definiscono il pezzo. Uno è un diffusore fisso in alabastro, illuminato dall'interno da una striscia LED ad alto CRI. L'altro è un disco in ottone lucido che scorre a mano lungo una base di pietra Medea.
L'atto di muovere il disco in ottone è il design stesso. Mentre scorre attraverso l'alabastro luminoso, luce e ombra si ridistribuiscono in lenta e silenziosa successione, raggiungendo il loro stato più suggestivo quando i due dischi convergono in una sovrapposizione simile a un'eclissi. Il gesto è minimale; l'effetto è teatrale.

Catellani & Smith pratica una forma di design di illuminazione artigianale a Grassobbio, vicino a Bergamo, dal 1989.
