Tolomeo Table

Made by Artemide

Designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina

Designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina and introduced in 1987, the Tolomeo Table is among the most recognizable objects in postwar Italian design. Its Compasso d'Oro recognition is well earned: the lamp resolves a genuinely difficult problem, placing a high-performance, fully articulated work light into a form of near-sculptural restraint.

The structure is polished and anodized aluminum throughout, a material chosen for its low weight and inherent rigidity. Tension cables and a counterbalanced spring mechanism allow the arm to hold any position without tightening a single screw. The gesture of adjustment is immediate, almost reflexive.

  • Articulated arm with spring-tension counterbalance system
  • Stamped aluminum reflector for directed, uniform illumination
  • Fully adjustable head, arm height, and horizontal reach
  • Polished and anodized aluminum construction

The Tolomeo has remained in continuous production since its introduction, not through nostalgia, but because the underlying design logic has not been improved upon. It belongs equally in an architect's studio and a considered residential interior.
