Dalú
Made by Artemide
Designed by Vico Magistretti
Vico Magistretti designed the Dalù in 1969 as a single, unbroken gesture. The helmet-like form in molded thermoplastic required no ornament, no assembly, no historical reference to justify itself. Shade, body, and personality arrived in one continuous curve.
The lamp appeared at the precise moment Italian designers were interrogating what plastic could be on its own terms, not as a surrogate for other materials. Magistretti answered with economy and wit. The Dalù did not adapt the traditional lampshade form; it retired it.
The current re-edition remains faithful to the original 1969 proportions, preserving the scale and confidence that made the piece so immediate on arrival. Available in multiple colors, the form reads differently across each, but the underlying conviction of the silhouette never wavers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who designed the Artemide Dalù and when?
The Dalù was designed by Milanese architect and designer Vico Magistretti in 1969. It was part of a broader movement in Italian design that explored the expressive and structural potential of industrial plastics.
What material is the Dalù lamp made from?
The Dalù is constructed from molded thermoplastic, a material central to the Italian design experimentation of the late 1960s. The process allows the entire form to be realized as a single, seamless shell.
Is the current Dalù a faithful re-edition of the original?
Yes. Artemide produces the Dalù as a re-edition that preserves the original 1969 proportions and silhouette. The form has not been redesigned or updated to follow intervening trends.
How does the Dalù fit into Vico Magistretti's broader body of work?
Magistretti was among the defining figures of postwar Italian design, working across furniture, lighting, and architecture. The Dalù shares a sensibility with pieces like the Eclisse lamp - a commitment to reducing a complex function to its simplest, most resolved form.
What size and light source does the Dalù use?
The Dalù is a compact table lamp intended for incandescent or compatible retrofit bulbs. Its scale makes it well-suited to desks, side tables, and shelves where presence is needed without visual weight.
