Medusa Pendant Lamp
Made by Established & Sons
Designed by Carlo Nason
Carlo Nason conceived the Medusa in 1970 as a study in suspended volume - its multi-layered, mouth-blown opaline glass shade drawing directly from the translucent, undulating form of a jellyfish. The design sat in the archive for decades before Established & Sons brought it forward in 2026, updating the internal lighting system without disturbing the original's Italian modernist sensibility.
Opaline glass diffuses light with a softness that is difficult to achieve through any other material. Combined with anodized aluminum hardware and a refined ceiling fixture, the Medusa produces an even ambient glow that gives a room atmosphere rather than illumination alone.
- Mouth-blown opaline glass shade, multi-layered construction
- Anodized aluminum components with refined ceiling fixture
- Available in three pendant sizes
- Contemporary lighting system integrated within original 1970 silhouette
- Made to order
Nason spent his career at the intersection of Murano glassblowing tradition and mid-century modernism, producing work that treated glass as a sculptural medium rather than a decorative one. The Medusa belongs to that lineage - a pendant where material depth and formal restraint carry equal weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who designed the Medusa Pendant Lamp?
The Medusa was designed by Carlo Nason in 1970. Nason was a Venetian designer and glassblower whose work drew on Murano's centuries-old blowing traditions while engaging directly with mid-century modernist form. Established & Sons reissued the design in 2026 with an updated lighting system.
What is opaline glass and how does it affect the light?
Opaline glass is a semi-opaque, mouth-blown glass that scatters light as it passes through, producing a soft, diffused glow rather than direct illumination. In the Medusa, the multi-layered construction deepens this effect, giving the pendant a warm, even ambient quality suited to dining spaces, lounges, and architectural interiors.
What sizes is the Medusa Pendant available in?
The Medusa Pendant is available in three sizes, allowing it to function as a single suspended focal point or as part of a grouped installation. Size selection depends on ceiling height, room scale, and the visual weight desired within the composition.
Is the Medusa Pendant made to order?
Yes, the Medusa Pendant is made to order. Because each shade is mouth-blown, production timelines reflect the pace of traditional glass fabrication rather than standard manufacturing lead times.
What is the design history behind Established & Sons?
Established & Sons is a British design house founded in 2005 with a focus on producing and preserving significant contemporary and archival furniture and lighting designs. The label works closely with both emerging designers and historical estates, as the Carlo Nason Medusa reissue demonstrates.
