Half Dome
Made by Kettal
Designed by Naoto Fukasawa
Half Dome begins with a single considered gesture: a slender mast rising to a gently curved head that hovers like a low moon above an outdoor living space. Naoto Fukasawa, whose practice is rooted in the relationship between human instinct and form, conceived the lamp as an almost natural presence, one that belongs to the landscape rather than interrupting it.
The structure is extruded thermo aluminum, available in bone or sand dune finishes, each tone drawn from the quieter registers of the natural world. A proximity sensor responds to a hand passed beneath the dome, making the act of switching the light on feel less like operating a fixture and more like a reflex. The adjustable lamp head allows directional control without disturbing the lamp's composed silhouette.

The mast and dome hold together with a coherence of proportion that is characteristic of Fukasawa's output across decades of practice. Nothing is added, and nothing is missing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Kettal Half Dome suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. The Half Dome is engineered specifically for outdoor environments, constructed from extruded thermo aluminum that resists the thermal and climatic demands of exterior spaces. Its finishes, bone and sand dune, are selected for durability as much as for their relationship to natural tones.
How does the proximity sensor on the Half Dome work?
The lamp activates by detecting a hand passed beneath the dome, requiring no physical switch. This gesture-based interaction reflects Naoto Fukasawa's broader design philosophy, which seeks to align objects with intuitive, almost unconscious human behavior.
Who is Naoto Fukasawa and what is his design approach?
Naoto Fukasawa is a Japanese designer whose work centers on the relationship between form and human instinct. He has collaborated with leading European and Japanese manufacturers and is known for objects that feel inevitable rather than designed, as though they have always existed in that precise form.
Can the Half Dome lamp head be repositioned?
Yes. The lamp head is adjustable, allowing directional control of the light without altering the overall silhouette of the piece. This makes it adaptable to seating arrangements, architectural features, or planting without compromising the lamp's proportional integrity.
What outdoor furniture collections does Kettal pair with Half Dome?
Kettal produces a wide range of outdoor seating, tables, and shade structures designed with a consistent material and formal sensibility. Half Dome's restrained palette and aluminum construction make it compatible with many of Kettal's own collections, as well as broader outdoor living environments that favor refined, understated form.
