Bela Lamp
Made by Kettal
Designed by Doshi Levien
Bela begins with a memory: the enormous spinning frames wound with colorful kite string that line Indian streets during the annual kite festival. Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien translated those light wooden structures into a lamp form, a spool-like armature onto which a continuous length of rope is clipped in loops that echo the texture and weightlessness of traditional handwoven lanterns.
Color is intrinsic to the design, not applied as an afterthought. The rope's winding rhythm gives the lamp its particular quality of filtered light, casting warmth through geometry rather than through shade or diffuser. The result carries cultural specificity without illustration.
Bela adapts with equal ease to the floor, suspended overhead, or used as a standing lamp. Designed for Kettal, it is equally at home in interior settings and outdoor environments, a quality that speaks to Kettal's longstanding commitment to materials that endure across conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who designed the Kettal Bela Lamp?
Bela was designed by Doshi Levien, the London-based studio founded by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien. Their work frequently draws on Indian craft traditions and cultural memory, translating them into objects with a precise, contemporary sensibility.
What is the Bela Lamp made of?
The Bela Lamp is built around a spool-like structural frame wound with a continuous length of rope, clipped in loops to create its characteristic layered texture. The construction references the light wooden frames and string of traditional Indian kite-making.
Can the Bela Lamp be used outdoors?
Yes. The Bela Lamp is rated for outdoor use, making it suitable for covered terraces, loggias, and exterior living spaces where weather exposure is a consideration.
What configuration options does the Bela Lamp offer?
Bela is designed to function as a floor lamp, a standing lamp, or a suspended pendant, adapting to the spatial and atmospheric needs of a given interior or exterior setting without requiring structural modification.
What is the cultural inspiration behind the Bela Lamp?
Doshi Levien drew on the visual memory of India's kite festivals, where large spinning frames wound with brightly colored string are a defining seasonal presence. The lamp translates that imagery into form and light rather than literal illustration.
