Cone Chair
Made by Vitra
Designed by Verner Panton
Verner Panton designed the Cone Chair in 1958 for a Danish restaurant he owned, and its geometry was a provocation from the start. A cone, inverted and balanced on a cruciform stainless steel swivel base, defied every convention of what a chair was supposed to look like.
The form is simultaneously sculptural and functional. A semi-circular upholstered shell wraps the sitter with a padded interior and a loose seat cushion, delivering comfort within a silhouette that reads as pure object. Panton was not interested in furniture that disappeared into a room. He wanted presence, tension, a conversation between form and space.
- Designed by Verner Panton in 1958
- Produced by Vitra in faithful collaboration with the Panton estate
- Inverted cone shell on a stainless steel swivel base
- Fully upholstered with a removable seat cushion

Panton spent his career asking how far form could travel before it ceased to function, and the Cone Chair is among his most direct answers. It remains a defining artifact of postwar Scandinavian design, as radical today as when it first appeared.
