Joe Colombo concepì la Tube Chair nel 1969 come una sfida diretta alle convenzioni delle sedute. Quattro cilindri cavi, ciascuno rivestito indipendentemente e collegati da clip metalliche rimovibili, sostituiscono interamente il telaio fisso. Il risultato non appartiene a nessuna configurazione singola, passando da poltrona a chaise longue a seconda del corpo che la occupa.
Il pensiero di Colombo era radicato nell'adattabilità come principio di design, non come un ripensamento. La forma seguiva la convinzione che i mobili dovessero rispondere al comportamento umano piuttosto che dettare la postura. Questa proposta era radicale nel 1969 e lo rimane ancora oggi.
