RF1903R Sideways Sofa
Made by Carl Hansen & Søn
Designed by Rikke Frost
Rikke Frost designed the Sideways Sofa as a quiet act of redirection. Where most sofas enforce a forward-facing posture, this one turns - physically and socially - encouraging the kind of unhurried, sidelong conversation that screens have made rare.
The backrest is shaped from steam-bent solid wood and woven natural paper cord, a material long associated with Danish furniture's commitment to honest, considered making. That latticed backrest keeps the form visually open, almost furniture-as-architecture. The seat and back are padded and upholstered in fabric, offering comfort that sustains long occupation without softening the sofa's precise silhouette.
- Steam-bent solid wood frame in oiled walnut
- Woven natural paper cord backrest
- Upholstered seat and back in Baru 0780 textile
- Asymmetric form rooted in Danish modernist tradition
- Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Søn
Frost, an award-winning Danish designer, has maintained a long creative dialogue with Carl Hansen & Søn, a workshop with roots in Odense stretching back to 1908. The RF1903R reflects both the brand's deep fluency with wood and paper cord and Frost's own interest in how furniture shapes behavior, not just space.
