Antonio Citterio ha ideato Convivium partendo da una premessa che la maggior parte dei progetti di cucine ignora: cucinare e socializzare avvengono contemporaneamente, e l'ambiente dovrebbe essere progettato per entrambe le attività. Per Arclinea, ha organizzato il sistema attorno a un'imponente isola centrale che funge da fulcro spaziale e sociale della cucina, attirando le persone verso la sua superficie sia che stiano lavorando o semplicemente socializzando.
Una struttura a pensile con tettoia, posizionata all'altezza del corrimano, conferisce alla composizione la sua coerenza architettonica. Anziché trattare lo stoccaggio come un problema da nascondere, Citterio lo utilizza come elemento di ritmo visivo, che lega la cucina all'ambiente circostante senza competere per l'attenzione.
