Mario Bellini designed the Chiara for Flos in 1969, working from a premise of radical reduction: a single flat sheet of polished stainless steel, cut and rolled into a cylinder, becomes both structure and optical instrument. The gesture is closer to origami than engineering.
The light source sits at the base, concealed within the column. Above it, a broad, curved canopy channels and diffuses the upward glow, casting soft, ambient light through its sweeping form. Bellini described the shade's silhouette as a nun's wimple, and the reference holds - there is something ceremonial in its proportion.

Bellini, one of the defining voices of Italian postwar design, built his practice across architecture, product design, and industrial form. The Chiara remains one of his most precise statements: a lamp that is, first, a sculpture.
