La Big Shadow nasce come una delle prime affermazioni di Marcel Wanders sul rapporto tra forma e atmosfera. Laddove una lampada da tavolo convenzionale separa paralume e struttura, qui il rivestimento in tessuto scende dalla sommità alla base, avvolgendo l'intero oggetto in un unico gesto continuo.
La luce non fuoriesce da un punto; si irradia attraverso l'intera forma. L'esterno combina poliammide e viscosa, materiali scelti per la qualità della loro traslucenza e la morbidezza della loro superficie. Sotto quell'esterno cedevole, una struttura metallica verniciata a cromo fornisce un'armatura interna precisa.
