21 Random
Made by Bocci
Designed by Omer Arbel
Every pendant in the 21 Random collection begins as a flat sheet of porcelain. Formed by hand and draped over a frosted borosilicate glass diffuser, the material is left to find its own resting shape before it sets. No mold determines the outcome. The process does.
Omer Arbel, the Vancouver-based architect and artist behind Bocci's most celebrated work, has long treated fabrication as a form of authorship. With the 21 series, that sensibility is pushed toward the extreme: the maker initiates, and the material resolves. The unglazed exterior retains the raw, mineral texture of fired porcelain, while a glazed interior quietly turns the glass diffuser's glow outward.
Suspended from slender coaxial cables, individual pendants can be composed into constellations of up to 50 pieces, scaling from a single quiet accent to an architectural installation. Canopy formats, cable lengths, and finishes can all be specified to suit the geometry of a given space.

Domande Frequenti
How is each Bocci 21 pendant made unique?
Each pendant is formed by draping a thin, hand-worked sheet of raw porcelain over a frosted borosilicate glass diffuser and allowing gravity and the material's own weight to determine the final shape. Because no mold is used in this stage of forming, every piece settles differently, making exact replication impossible.
What does the porcelain's unglazed exterior look like over time?
The unglazed surface retains the matte, mineral character of fired porcelain and does not develop a glaze patina. It ages subtly with handling and environment, but the raw texture remains the defining quality of the exterior finish.
How large can a 21 Random multi-pendant installation be?
The collection supports compositions of up to 50 individual pendants, suspended from canopies that can be specified in different formats to suit the ceiling geometry. Cable lengths are also configurable, allowing the cluster's vertical depth and spread to be tailored to the architecture of the space.
Who is Omer Arbel?
Omer Arbel is a Vancouver-based architect and designer who co-founded Bocci, the Canadian studio known for process-driven lighting design. His practice treats industrial and material processes as design instruments, often producing forms that result from controlled chance rather than predetermined geometry.
Is the Bocci 21 suitable for residential and commercial projects?
The 21 series works across both contexts. As a single pendant it reads as a sculptural object in a domestic setting; scaled to 30 or 50 units, it becomes an architectural installation suited to hospitality, cultural, or commercial interiors. The specification options, including canopy format, cable length, and finish, are designed to support the particular constraints of each project type.
