19 Series
Made by Bocci
Designed by Omer Arbel
Sand casting is, by nature, a process that resists control. Omer Arbel exploits this resistance deliberately: molten red brass is poured into a sand mold and permitted to spill beyond its intended boundary. That overflow is not trimmed away. It stays, preserved as a permanent record of the moment of making.
The exterior oxidizes into a dense, highly textured surface. Turn the vessel over and the interior tells a different story, hand-polished to a smooth, reflective finish. The contrast between these two states is the object's central tension.
- Each vessel individually produced and serialized
- Oxidized, textured exterior with hand-polished interior
- Small edition: approximately 280 mm inner diameter
- Solid red brass construction that develops patina over time
No two pieces share the same contour, texture, or patina. Variation is not a byproduct here - it is the design. The 19 Series belongs to a broader body of work in which Arbel treats industrial processes as collaborative forces rather than means to a predetermined end.

Domande Frequenti
What is sand casting and how does it shape the 19 Series?
Sand casting involves pressing a form into compacted sand to create a mold, then pouring molten metal into that cavity. For the 19 Series, Omer Arbel deliberately allows the liquid brass to exceed the mold boundary, so the irregular overflow becomes a permanent part of the finished vessel rather than waste to be removed.
Is each 19 Series vessel truly unique?
Yes. Each piece is individually produced and assigned its own serial number. Differences in contour, surface texture, and the character of the oxidized exterior are inherent to the sand-casting process and vary from piece to piece - no two vessels are identical.
How does the brass patina develop over time?
Red brass oxidizes gradually when exposed to air and handling, deepening the tonal complexity of the exterior surface. The progression is natural and unrepeatable, meaning the object continues to change in appearance long after it leaves the studio.
Who is Omer Arbel and what is his design approach?
Omer Arbel is a Vancouver-based architect and designer who serves as creative director of Bocci. His practice treats industrial and material processes as active participants in form-making, often setting parameters that allow chance, thermodynamics, or physics to determine the final result rather than imposing a fixed outcome.
What is the design philosophy behind Bocci's work?
Bocci operates as a design and fabrication studio in Vancouver, producing work in which process and material behavior are central to the object's identity. The studio resists standardization, favoring methods that make each piece a direct record of how it was made.
