Tobia Scarpa

Born 1935 | Italy

Born in Venice in 1935, Tobia Scarpa grew up surrounded by architecture and craft, then trained at IUAV in Venice. From the beginning, his work showed an unusual mix of technical discipline and cultural sensitivity, a way of designing that feels precise without ever turning cold. He also explored glass design early on, including work in Murano, and carried that material curiosity into everything that followed.

With his wife and creative partner Afra Bianchin, he built one of the most influential studios in Italian design, producing work that ranges from iconic furniture and lighting to industrial buildings and interiors. Scarpa collaborated with leading manufacturers across decades, and his pieces are valued for clear proportions, quiet comfort, and a long view of materials. He received the Compasso d'Oro lifetime achievement award and continues to be regarded as a benchmark for Italian modern design.

Knowing how to build is a debt to technique. Knowing how to give a meaning to things I create is a debt to logic required by the forms.
