VL Ring Crown Table Lamp
Made by Louis Poulsen
Designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen
Vilhelm Lauritzen designed the VL Ring Crown in the 1940s for the Danish Broadcasting House in Copenhagen, one of Denmark's most celebrated functionalist buildings. The lamp was never incidental to that interior. It was conceived as architecture at the scale of a table, its proportions and materials held to the same discipline as the building itself.
Louis Poulsen continues to produce the lamp in Denmark, faithful to Lauritzen's original drawings. The shade is mouth-blown opal glass in three fused layers, a construction that diffuses light evenly and eliminates glare without filtering warmth. Light falls primarily downward, pooling with quiet intention rather than broadcasting into a room.
The frame is untreated satin polished brass. It will not stay as it arrives. Over years of use, the surface shifts, deepening in tone, recording the particular atmosphere of the space it inhabits. That change is not a flaw in the design. It is the design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who designed the VL Ring Crown lamp and when?
The VL Ring Crown was designed by Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen in the 1940s, originally created for the Danish Broadcasting House in Copenhagen. Lauritzen was a leading figure in Scandinavian functionalism, and the lamp reflects the same rigorous approach to form and material that defined his architecture.
Why does the brass frame change color over time?
The brass frame is left untreated and satin polished, so it oxidizes naturally with exposure to air and handling. This patination is intentional, the surface gradually deepens and individualizes, giving each lamp a character tied to its specific environment and history.
What kind of light does the VL Ring Crown emit?
The lamp directs light primarily downward. The triple-layered mouth-blown opal glass diffuses the source evenly, producing a soft, glare-free pool of light well suited to reading, desk work, or intimate table settings.
Is the VL Ring Crown still made in Denmark?
Yes. Louis Poulsen produces the VL Ring Crown in Denmark, maintaining the manufacturing standards and material specifications established in Lauritzen's original design. The mouth-blown glass shades are still produced using traditional glassblowing techniques.
What interiors or settings suit the VL Ring Crown?
The lamp's restrained geometry and warm material palette make it at home in spaces that favor precision and craft over ornament. It is frequently specified for studies, executive offices, and residential interiors where the quality of focused light and the presence of a design object both carry weight.
