VL 45 Radiohus LED Portable Lamp
Made by Louis Poulsen
Designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen
In 1954, Vilhelm Lauritzen designed a pendant for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's Radiohuset in Copenhagen, a building he had conceived himself. The VL 45 Radiohus LED Portable Lamp is a faithful reinterpretation of that original, translated into a form that moves freely through interior and exterior spaces alike.
The mouth-blown opal glass shade preserves the soft, even diffusion that defined the historic fixture, casting a warm, enveloping glow without glare. A genuine leather carrying strap, offered in complementary colorways, grounds the object in craft and gives it the quiet confidence of something made to be handled. The lamp stands independently or can be suspended, adapting to the atmosphere of the moment.

Lauritzen's sensibility was rooted in Danish functionalism, a belief that architecture and its objects should serve human life without calling attention to themselves. The VL 45 Radiohus carries that philosophy forward, its proportion and restraint as deliberate today as they were seven decades ago.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the history behind the VL 45 Radiohus design?
The VL 45 originates from a pendant lamp Vilhelm Lauritzen created in 1954 for the Radiohuset, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation headquarters in Copenhagen, a building he also designed. Louis Poulsen's reinterpretation preserves the original's proportions and diffusion quality while adapting it for portable, rechargeable use.
How long does the battery last on a full charge?
At full brightness, the VL 45 Radiohus provides up to five hours of continuous light on a single USB-C charge. Run time can be extended by using the touch-sensitive dimmer to reduce output.
Can the VL 45 Radiohus be used outdoors?
Yes. The lamp is rated for damp environments, making it appropriate for covered outdoor settings such as terraces, loggias, or sheltered garden spaces. It is not designed for exposure to direct rain or submersion.
Are the battery and LED components replaceable?
Both the battery and the LED module are designed to be replaceable, which extends the lamp's serviceable life and aligns with a longer view of ownership and sustainability.
Who was Vilhelm Lauritzen as a designer?
Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894-1984) was one of Denmark's foremost modernist architects, known for buildings that integrated architecture, interiors, and objects into a coherent whole. His work for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation remains a landmark of Scandinavian functionalism, and his lighting designs for those spaces are among the most historically significant in Danish design.
