Vilhelm Lauritzen

Born 1894 | Denmark

Vilhelm Lauritzen was a Danish architect and designer born in 1894 in Slagelse, Denmark. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 1921, and soon after established the practice that would become Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects. He is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Danish functionalism, with a body of work shaped by technical rigor, restraint, and a belief that architecture should serve people with dignity and beauty.

Over the course of his career, Lauritzen designed some of Denmark's most important modern buildings, including the original Copenhagen Airport terminal and Radiohuset, while also creating furniture and lighting closely integrated with his architectural work. Louis Poulsen notes that his lighting designs, especially those first developed for Radiohuset, remain central to his legacy and continue to define Scandinavian lighting history. His work is distinguished by calm proportions, functional intelligence, and an enduring sense of elegance that feels both architectural and deeply human. He died in 1984.
