Skygarden 1
Made by Flos
Designed by Marcel Wanders
Marcel Wanders conceived the Skygarden as a meditation on contrast. The outer form reads as a clean, commanding hemisphere. The interior world it conceals is anything but minimal.
A hand-finished plaster diffuser, cast in delicate botanical relief, transforms the ceiling plane into a private garden, visible only to those seated beneath it. The gesture is characteristically Wanders: equal parts wit and reverence.
Where much of twentieth-century lighting design pursued reduction, the Skygarden reaches backward, toward the ornamental ceilings of baroque interiors, and makes that reference feel entirely present-tense. It is a lamp that rewards proximity, offering one face to the room and another, far more intimate one, to the people gathered under it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Flos Skygarden made of?
The Skygarden features a die-cast aluminum alloy outer shell and a hand-finished interior diffuser cast in painted white plaster. The plaster surface is worked in a botanical relief pattern, a process that gives each piece a subtly artisanal character.
What ceiling height does the Skygarden 1 require?
Flos recommends the Skygarden for spaces with generous ceiling heights, generally 10 feet or higher, so the scale of the fixture reads correctly and the ambient light distributes evenly across the room.
What is Marcel Wanders' design philosophy behind the Skygarden?
Wanders built the Skygarden around the idea of concealed richness. The exterior presents a restrained, almost industrial silhouette, while the interior references the ornamental plasterwork of baroque ceilings, a deliberate tension between modernist form and historical ornament.
How does the Skygarden produce its light?
The Skygarden emits a diffused, ambient glow directed downward through the open base of the hemisphere. The plaster relief interior softens and scatters the light, producing a warm, even quality rather than a direct or focused beam.
Is the Flos Skygarden available in different sizes?
Flos produces the Skygarden in multiple diameters, with the Skygarden 1 being the standard residential scale. Larger variants are available for more expansive commercial or hospitality environments.
