Aarde
Made by Indigenus
Designed by Sebastian Herkner
Aarde is an Afrikaans word meaning "earth," and it anchors this piece in the geological and cultural sediment of the African continent. Indigenus approaches design as an act of translation, converting lived landscape and social complexity into form.
The work reads as a study in layering: the accumulated strata of Africa's demographic diversity, its ecological contrasts, and the particular quality of its light. Each layer is distinct yet continuous, the way identity forms over generations.
- Conceived around the visual and cultural depth of the African continent
- Informed by natural light, topography, and demographic plurality
- Designed to be read slowly, revealing itself differently as conditions change
Indigenus draws from a design sensibility rooted in place, using African material culture as a primary language rather than a reference point. Aarde is not decorative in the conventional sense; it carries the weight of the earth it is named for.
