Marcel Wanders

Born 1963 | Netherlands

Marcel Wanders was born on July 2, 1963 in Boxtel, the Netherlands. He graduated cum laude from the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts Arnhem in 1988 and first gained international attention in 1996 with his iconic Knotted Chair, produced for the Droog collective, which combined innovative materials with artisanal processes. His early work helped define Dutch conceptual design in the 1990s and established his reputation for playful, expressive objects.

In 2001 Wanders co-founded Moooi, a global design brand where he serves as creative director, creating furniture, lighting, and decorative objects that are imaginative and luxurious. His Amsterdam-based studio has realized thousands of projects for global brands and private clients, including interiors, product design, and experiential spaces. Wanders’ work appears in major museum collections and exhibitions around the world and continues to challenge conventions by infusing humor, narrative, and emotion into contemporary design.

I see design as a way to tell a story. Often my design is the story. It describes the experience I am about to create, as well as the significance that the design may have for someone else.
