Jean Prouvé concepì il Trapèze all'inizio degli anni Cinquanta per la Cité Universitaire di Antony, alle porte di Parigi. La commissione richiedeva mobili che potessero farsi valere all'interno di un contesto architettonico, e Prouvé rispose con un tavolo che si presenta come un piccolo edificio a sé stante.
Il nome deriva direttamente dalla forma: gambe trapezoidali piegate in lamiera d'acciaio, lo stesso vocabolario industriale che Prouvé applicò alle sue case prefabbricate e agli edifici scolastici della stessa epoca. La struttura non è mai celata. È questo il punto.
