Thinking Man's Chair
Made by Cappellini
Designed by Jasper Morrison
Jasper Morrison designed the Thinking Man's Chair in 1988, and its logic remains undeniable. The name is not metaphor but instruction: this is a chair conceived for sustained occupation, for the kind of stillness that accompanies genuine thought.
The structure is tubular metal, disciplined and spare. Where the body makes contact, flat bars replace the tube, broadening the surface and distributing weight with quiet intelligence. Armrests carry integrated drink holders, a detail that reads less as convenience than as Morrison's dry wit made physical.
- Varnished tubular and flat-bar metal construction
- Available in pure white (RAL 9010), violet blue (RAL 5000), and oxide red (RAL 3009)
- Oxide red version offered in a special edition with engraved text tracing the structure's radii of curvature
Morrison's early career, shaped by studies at Kingston and the Royal College of Art, was already tending toward this kind of economy: form derived from function, detail earned rather than applied. The Thinking Man's Chair entered the Cappellini catalogue as one of his first production pieces and has remained there ever since.
