S Chair
Made by Cappellini
Tom Dixon conceived the S Chair in 1988, before his career had fully crystallized, working with welded steel and wicker in a way that owed more to intuition than formal training. The chair's fluid, continuous curve was not a stylistic conceit but a structural proposition: the body follows the form, and the form follows nothing but its own logic.
Cappellini recognized its potential and brought it into production, a decision that helped establish both the brand's appetite for radical voices and Dixon's international standing. The collaboration marked an early example of Italian manufacturing lending precision to British invention.
The steel frame is available with a wicker weave finish, preserving the rawness of the original, or upholstered in fabric for a softer reading of the same silhouette. Either way, the S-shaped profile reads as a single, unbroken gesture, equally at home against a plain wall as it is in the center of a room.
