Vasi Ruutu

Mouth-blowing glass into a steel mold demands a coordinated sequence of skilled hands, from gathering and blowing to shaping, transferring, and finishing. Each stage of the Ruutu's production requires a specialist, and the hand-polishing alone is a distinct craft discipline. The twenty-four-hour process reflects the cumulative precision of traditional Finnish glassmaking.

Ruutu is the Finnish word for diamond, a reference to the vase's characteristic faceted silhouette. The Bouroullec brothers are known for finding form through reduction, and the name reinforces the geometry at the heart of the design.

Mouth-blown glass retains a subtle organic quality, slight variations in wall thickness and surface that no industrial process can replicate. These qualities give the Ruutu vase a warmth and depth that shifts with light and viewing angle.

The Ruutu vase received both the iF Product Design Award and the Red Dot: Best of the Best distinction in 2015, two of the most rigorous international recognitions in product design.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are French brothers whose collaborative practice, based in Paris, has produced some of the most considered furniture and objects of the past two decades. They work across scales and materials, always with an emphasis on proportion, quietude, and the relationship between object and inhabitation.
