Nata da una collaborazione del 1971 tra Achille Castiglioni e Pio Manzù, la Parentesi prende il nome dal simbolo della parentesi, un riferimento visivo al tubo sagomato nichelato che vive su un cavo d'acciaio dal pavimento al soffitto. Il cavo d'acciaio può raggiungere i 4 metri, e il tubo permette alla testa della lampada di muoversi verticalmente lungo il cavo per raggiungere un'altezza personalizzata. Il corpo della testa è in elastomero nero stampato a iniezione, dotato di interruttore. La Parentesi fornisce illuminazione diretta ed è disponibile in nero, nichel o rosso.
Ispirazione dietro il design: "Pio Manzù ebbe l'idea originale per la Parentesi", spiega Achille Castiglioni. "Pensò a un braccio verticale fisso e a una scatola cilindrica con una fessura per la luce, che andava su e giù: la si bloccava con una vite. Sostituì il braccio con un cavo metallico che, quando piegato, crea attrito e permette alla lampada di rimanere in posizione senza bisogno di viti."
