Dopo aver concepito un design per una sedia interamente in plastica realizzata in un unico pezzo, Verner Panton impiegò diversi anni per trovare un produttore. Entrò in contatto con Vitra per la prima volta nel 1963 e insieme svilupparono la Panton Chair, che fu presentata nel 1967. Fu acclamata come una sensazione e ricevette numerosi premi. La versione originale della sedia con una finitura laccata lucida è ancora oggi commercializzata con il nome Panton Chair Classic.
