Hans J. Wegner drew his first sketches for the China Chair in 1944, looking to the seated posture of Ming dynasty furniture as a structural and philosophical point of departure. The result was not imitation but translation: Wegner distilled centuries of Chinese joinery into a Danish vernacular, one shaped by his deep understanding of how wood moves, bends, and bears weight.
The chair's curved backrest and arched top rail follow the body with quiet precision. Every joint is a considered resolution, every curve a product of hand and eye working in close agreement. Wegner believed furniture should reward attention from any angle, and the China Chair holds to that conviction fully - back, side, and front each presenting a resolved, self-contained composition.

- Solid cherry wood frame with clear lacquer finish, or available in black lacquer
- Upholstered seat in natural or dyed cane
- Handcrafted construction with mortise-and-tenon joinery
Fritz Hansen introduced a black lacquered variant in 2008, extending the chair's palette without altering its identity. Eight decades of production have changed little about its form - a quiet measure of how well Wegner understood proportion from the start.
