The CH22 was part of Hans J. Wegner's debut collection for Carl Hansen and Søn, introduced in 1950 alongside a group of wood-framed pieces distinguished by their paper cord seats. That material choice was deliberate: cord over upholstery meant lightness, breathability, and a visual honesty that felt radical against the padded conventions of the era.
After decades out of production, Carl Hansen and Søn reissued the CH22 in 2016. The chair returned intact, with every structural detail preserved. The large, sculpted wooden backrest carries visible cover caps - a signature Wegner gesture that treats joinery as ornament rather than concealing it.
- Frame in FSC-certified solid oak with an oiled finish
- Seat and back woven in natural paper cord
- Arm support wraps the side stretcher and seat frame, widening beneath the armrest for structural reinforcement
- Original 1950 design, reissued without alteration in 2016
Wegner's approach to the chair as a fully resolved object from every angle is evident here. The arm construction alone - narrowing as it meets the frame, then opening to full width at the armrest - reflects a precision that is as much about proportion as it is about comfort.
