Naoto Fukasawa

Born 1956 | Japan

Naoto Fukasawa was born in 1956 in Yamanashi, Japan, and has become one of the most influential figures in contemporary industrial design. He graduated from Seian University of Art and Design and began his career at IDEO in Tokyo before founding his own design studio, Naoto Fukasawa Design, in 2003. Fukasawa’s work is defined by simplicity, clarity, and an almost effortless elegance that arises from deep observation of human behavior and everyday contexts. His designs are often described as “seriality and intuition,” blending universal appeal with quiet intelligence.

Fukasawa has collaborated with leading global brands including Muji, Herman Miller, B&B Italia, Magis, and Panasonic, designing products that resonate with users through unobtrusive functionality and subtle refinement. His work has earned international acclaim including the Compasso d’Oro award, and is held in major design collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago. He also serves as a visiting professor and has authored several books on design thinking and practice, influencing generations of designers worldwide.
