Dirk Wynants

Dirk Wynants was born in Belgium in 1964 and grew up in the workshop of his father, a cabinetmaker. He studied interior architecture and furniture design at the Sint-Lucas Institute of Architecture in Ghent, developing a practical understanding of materials, construction, and production. After working with international design collections, he recognized an opportunity to create outdoor furniture that offered greater functionality, durability, and social purpose.

In 1994, Wynants founded Extremis following the success of Gargantua, an innovative outdoor table with integrated, height-adjustable seating. The design established the principles that continue to define his work: intelligent engineering, long-term performance, and the creation of settings that encourage people to gather. He later founded Dirk Wynants Design Works in 2006, extending his practice into product development and creative direction. His work has received numerous international honors, including Red Dot, iF Design, Good Design, and Henry van de Velde awards.
