Characterized by her highly experimental nature and impeccable eye, Zaha Hadid is a design force to reckon with. Her work full of form, curves, and fragmented geometry possesses a futuristic quality meanwhile remaining substantial rather than just fashionable. Having several accolades under her belt, she has recently been honored by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) with the 2016 Royal Gold Medal. An extraordinary recognition, Zaha Hadid is the first woman to be awarded the prize in its 167 year history. We would like to congratulate our long time friend Zaha Hadid on this remarkable achievement.

Awarded to a lifetime’s work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by Her Majesty The Queen of England and is given to an individual or collective who has had a significant influence directly or indirectly on the advancement of architecture. Awarded since 1848, past Royal Gold Medalists include Frank Gehry in 2000, Norman Foster in 1983, Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe in 1959, Le Corbusier in 1953, Frank Lloyd Wright in 1941, and George Gilbert Scott in 1859.

A globally influential force in architecture and design, the Iraq born, London based architect creates distinctively neo-futuristic works. The Vitra Fire Station in Weil am Rhein in Germany, the London Aquatics Centre, and the Guangzhou Opera House are amongst her most remarkable works. In Miami she has designed One Thousand Museum residential tower to be completed in 2016. Hadid also creates several design pieces part of our collection such as the Moon systemNektonAqua Table, and more. In 2002, Luminaire hosted an exhibition of Hadid’s remarkable design pieces. Luminaire looks forward to Hadid’s prolific design contributions.
