The James Dyson Foundation: Challenge Cards

Such a challenge is exactly what The James Dyson Foundation had in mind when creating their new 'Challenge Card' project.
Such a challenge is exactly what The James Dyson Foundation had in mind when creating their new 'Challenge Card' project.

The grandest of ideas need only the smallest of spark to begin their existence. Creativity simply put, is the mental process of generating new ideas or concepts — a compromise between our minds and the world. Any idea, process or product is a result of creativity. Creativity is the freest form of self-expression. There is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling for children, teens, or adults than to be able to express themselves openly and without judgment. The ability to be creative, to create something from personal feelings and experiences, can reflect and nurture children's emotional health. The skills we develop through creativity at all stages of life, especially during the early years, can significantly enhance the development of our creativity.

Finding moments to spark creativity, even when such moments appear to be inconvenient or out of reach, is precisely when we must encourage ourselves and those around us to reach our possibilities. Such a challenge is exactly what The James Dyson Foundation had in mind when creating their new 'Challenge Card' project.

James Dyson along with his company Dyson has built a long history of using design to rethink traditional problems. Their fanless fan proved to be a design landmark by challenging the standards of its past while taking both its function and aesthetics into account. Such thinking, tinkering, and exploration are what allows us to tap into the limitless potential of creativity and begin to see possibilities around corners we did not know existed or even questioned.

The project is an ideal resource for children but open to people of all ages. It is a series of explorations with easily accessible tools and supplies that tackle some of the world's most exciting and diverse problems. From designing and building a Balloon Car Racer using a balloon, a plastic cup, straws, thread, and rubber bands, to building a lifesize Cardboard Chair that can hold the weight of a human body; each of the challenges are sure to bring smiles, questions, successes, failures and in the end, pure creativity.
