An unparalleled springboard for young international design talent, the 18th edition of SaloneSatellite takes place April 14-19, 2015 as part of Milan’s Salone del Mobile. With the sole purpose of discovering young design talent and connecting them with top industry tastemakers and influencers, SaloneSatellite has become a discovery platform for the future of design. For the past 16 years, the designreport award has recognized a newcomer demonstrating particular promise and innovative thinking at SaloneSatellite. Luminaire is proud to be the sole US sponsor of the designreport award since its inception.
Our ongoing sponsorship of the award will help this year’s winner fund new projects and attain the press and publicity they deserve. Having long believed in the revolutionary power of young talent, we are the sole US sponsor of the designreport award, a prize officiated by Design Report magazine. The six strong juries decide on the winners on the spot in Milan selecting from the 700 designers exhibiting prototypes at SaloneSatellite, which is already strictly curated by Marva Griffin. Many of the pieces presented at the exhibition as prototypes have gone into production, and many of the participating designers have become household names. Co-founder and President of Luminaire, Nasir Kassamali, was himself an inaugural juror along with other prominent design luminaries including Ross Lovegrove, Konstantin Grcic, and Matali Crasset. This year the jury includes Michael Anastassiades, Rosanna Hu, Agniezka Jacobson, Poberto Paoli, Lars Quadejacob, and Dr. Jana Scholze.
Since its inception, the designreport award has launched the careers of many young artists exposing them to the international scene. In 2013, Poetic Lab won the prestigious award for a new iteration of their Ripple light that is now in production for Austrian brand Lobmeyer. In 2010, Nao Tamura won the award, following her win the designer went to have her Seasons plates produced by Covo. Luminaire has exhibited Nao Tamura twice in 2010 and 2012 precipitating the designer’s wide appeal. In 2010, Luminaire invited Tamura to exhibit a site-specific installation at our transFORM exhibition during Design Miami/ and Art Basel in Miami Beach. Other winners such as the Singapore based Studio Juju and Oki Sato from Nendo have participated in other Luminaire exhibitions. Most recently, Luminaire exhibited Nendo’s Softer Than Steel Collection for Desalto in our 2014 DesignJapan exhibition. Luminaire is a proud sponsor of the designreport awards and looks forward to fostering and acknowledging future young design talent.
