This month, the SaloneSatellite celebrates its 15th year of championing young talent as part of Milan’s Salone del Mobile. An exhibition held as part of the larger design fair, it serves as a platform for innovative work by up-and-coming international designers. From within this select group, the Design Report Award further recognizes one newcomer who demonstrates particular promise and innovative thinking.
Having long believed in the revolutionary power of young talent, Luminaire has served as the sole US sponsor of these awards since their inception thirteen years ago. Co-founder and President Nasir Kassamali also participated as a judge at the very first presentation along with other prominent design luminaries including Ross Lovegrove, Konstantin Grcic and Matali Crasset.
Luminaire’s ongoing support of the Design Report Award will help this year’s winner fund new projects and attain the publicity they deserve. The 2010 winner, Japanese designer Nao Tamura, was featured at Luminaire Lab with a special installation during that year’s Art Basel Miami. Last year’s recipient, Singapore-based studio juju presented various interpretations on storage, with great attention paid to both aesthetics and function. Studio juju went on to receive the Designer of the Future Award at Design Miami Basel 2011.
The Design Report Award ceremony takes place this year on Thursday, April 19th. We look forward to the discovery of new talent that will inspire a legacy of life-changing design.
