On Thursday, January 10 Luminaire hosted the screening of Gary Hustwit’s latest documentary Rams about the legendary German designer, Dieter Rams. Held at the Coral Gables Art Cinema, Luminaire welcomed guests for an evening of design and kicked off the year with one of its latest programming initiatives, Luminaire Encounters, which will include networking events, film screenings, and other special partnership events.
The evening began with a few warm words from the cinema’s director of programming, Nat Chediak who recognized Luminaire for their commitment to the design community. Before the screening Luminaire debuted a short film co-produced in-house that features artists, architects, designers, and chefs, all based in Los Angeles which highlighted Luminaire’s West Coast debut in November 2018. Following the short, Luminaire’s CEO Nasir Kassamali spoke about the company’s expansion into LA and thanked everyone for their long-standing support. Shortly after, Nasir gave a warm welcome to the film’s director and producer Gary Hustwit. Hustwit shed some insight on his inspiration for the film and explained how his sincere determination to tell Ram’s story helped bring the film together.
After the screening, Hustwit answered questions from the audience and spoke about his collaboration with English musician and visual artist Brian Eno who produced the film’s original score. Following the brief Q+A, guests joined Hustwit and the Luminaire team for a reception at its Coral Gables showroom just steps from the cinema. At the showroom, guests were greeted with a glass of champagne and enjoyed an intimate setting that allowed for further conversation with the filmmaker. Luminaire was thrilled to welcome Hustwit and share an inspiring evening with dear friends including architects Chad Oppenheim and Rene Gonzalez, filmmaker Stella M. Holmes, and designers Giancarlo Pietri and Sophia Tragash.
