On Tuesday, February 12, Luminaire L.A. hosted the first of its series titled Luminaire Dialogues during the inaugural year of Frieze Art Fair Los Angeles. In collaboration with Whitewall magazine, Luminaire welcomed Los Angeles-based art collector Alberto Chehebar and architect Kulapat Yantrasast of design studio wHY for an evening moderated by art dealer Carlos A. Rivera that explored the lasting influence of the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, and the relationship between art within architecture.

Luminaire Los Angeles’ sky lit atrium served as the stage for the dialogue with seating generously provided by Vitra. As guests arrived, they were greeted with a glass of champagne as they mingled with Chehebar, Yantrasast, Rivera, Luminaire’s Nasir and Nargis Kassamali, and Whitewall’s Michael Klug and Laurent Moïsi. The dialogue began with an introduction by Luminaire’s Mirkku Kullberg who introduced Rivera, Chehebar, and Yantrasast kicking off the discussion with the Bauhaus’ representation of a living movement and how art collecting and architecture have become an interdisciplinary practice dedicated to serving the arts, culture, design communities, and the environment. Later Chehebar brought to light an interesting connection between L.A. and Miami elaborating on how Miami has grown to have a more dense art community and how L.A. is now picking up on that movement. The dialogue also covered how functionality, an influence from the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College, today plays a large role in environmentalism as well as the creative process, placing architecture as an art form.

The event allowed guests to share an intimate evening of engaging conversation and interactions with others from the world of of art, fashion, and design as well as friends Mary Ta, Omar Benson Miller, and team members of Frieze. With its series Luminaire Dialogues the company aims to provide a platform for thought-provoking lectures, talks, and panel discussions hosting a number of dialogues throughout the year that explore a wide-range of topics.
