On the Rocks Sofa
Made by Edra
Designed by Francesco Binfare
Francesco Binfaré approaches furniture as a sculptor approaches form. On the Rocks is built on the conviction that a sofa need not be fixed, either in shape or in intention.
Its four independent seats, three polygonal and one quadrilateral, are hand-molded from Edra's proprietary Gellyfoam compound, a material that achieves both precise silhouette and deep, yielding comfort without any rigid internal armature. Two flexible backs accompany the seats, repositioned at will to shift the composition entirely.
The absence of a fixed structure is not a reduction but an expansion. Each arrangement reveals a different spatial logic, a different atmosphere. Geometry becomes an instrument of improvisation rather than constraint.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Edra's Gellyfoam and how does it perform?
Gellyfoam is a proprietary compound developed by Edra that is hand-molded into precise geometric forms. It delivers deep, yielding comfort without a rigid internal armature, allowing each module to hold its silhouette while remaining exceptionally responsive to the body.
Can the On the Rocks modules be reconfigured after purchase?
Yes. The four seat modules and two flexible backs are entirely independent, designed to be repositioned freely. There is no fixed assembly, so the composition can be rearranged to suit different rooms, occasions, or spatial intentions.
Who is Francesco Binfaré and what defines his design approach?
Francesco Binfaré is an Italian designer whose practice centers on the relationship between the human body, material, and form. His work for Edra consistently challenges conventional furniture typologies, treating comfort and geometry as equally expressive tools.
Is the On the Rocks Sofa made to order?
Yes, the On the Rocks is produced to order, with configurations and upholstery selected in consultation. Lead times vary; an inquiry will provide current production timelines and available material options.
How do I specify the On the Rocks for a contract or residential project?
Because the piece is modular and made to order, it is well suited to both residential and contract specifications. A design professional can work directly with the authorized dealer to coordinate upholstery, module count, and delivery requirements.
