High Chair K65
Made by Artek
Designed by Alvar Aalto
Alvar Aalto conceived the K65 in the 1930s as part of his broader inquiry into what furniture could be: democratic in spirit, honest in material, and shaped by the body rather than by convention. The result is a counter-height chair that has lost nothing to time.
The K65 is built around Aalto's patented L-leg, a form achieved by bending solid Finnish birch at a right angle without weakening the grain. That structural ingenuity is also the chair's defining visual gesture, lending the piece its characteristic lightness and precision. The low, gently curved backrest and integrated footrest reflect a quiet attentiveness to how people actually sit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Alvar Aalto's L-leg construction?
The L-leg is Aalto's patented method of bending solid birch wood at a right angle by cutting the wood partway through and bonding in flexible strips, preserving structural integrity while eliminating the need for metal joints. It became one of the defining innovations of twentieth-century furniture design.
What seat materials are available for the K65?
The K65 is offered with several seat surface options, including birch veneer, laminate, linoleum, upholstered fabric, and leather, allowing the chair to be configured for both residential and contract environments.
What height counter or table does the K65 suit?
The K65 is designed as a counter-height chair, making it appropriate for surfaces ranging from approximately 90 to 105 centimeters, including kitchen counters, bar tables, and standing-height work surfaces.
Is the Artek K65 stackable?
Yes, the K65's L-leg construction allows the chairs to stack, which contributes to their longstanding use in both residential and institutional settings where storage and flexibility are considerations.
How does the K65 differ from Aalto's standard dining chair, the K60?
The K65 is taller than the K60, with longer legs and an integrated footrest scaled for counter-height use. Both share the same L-leg frame and design lineage, but the K65 also features a low curved backrest that the stool-form K60 omits.
