Bar Stool 64
Made by Artek
Designed by Alvar Aalto
Alvar Aalto designed the Bar Stool 64 in 1935, and its logic remains as clear today as it was then. Bent birch legs curve outward from the seat with a precision that is structural and sculptural at once, a gesture that defined Aalto's approach to wood as a warm, responsive material rather than a rigid one.
The circular footrest ring is the stool's signature detail, binding the four legs into a unified form and providing a natural place to rest while seated at a counter or bar. Because the design is fully symmetrical, orientation is irrelevant. There is no front or back, no correct way to pull it to a table.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the seat height of the Artek Bar Stool 64?
The Bar Stool 64 is designed for bar and counter heights. The standard seat height is approximately 64 cm (roughly 25 inches), which suits most kitchen counters and bar surfaces in the 90 to 105 cm range.
What wood is used in the Artek Bar Stool 64?
The stool is constructed from Finnish birch, using Aalto's pioneering bent and laminated wood technique. The process heats and molds solid birch into curved forms without compromising the structural integrity of the grain.
Is the Bar Stool 64 still made in Finland?
Yes. Artek continues to produce the Bar Stool 64 in Finland, maintaining the manufacturing methods and material sourcing consistent with the original 1935 production.
What finish and upholstery options are available?
The stool is offered in natural lacquered birch as well as a range of stained and painted finishes. Seat options include solid wood and upholstered variants, depending on the configuration selected.
How does the Bar Stool 64 differ from Artek's Stool 60?
The Stool 60 is a lower, multi-purpose stool without a footrest, originally designed for flexible stacking and everyday use. The Bar Stool 64 is scaled specifically for counter and bar heights and features the distinctive circular footrest ring that makes it purpose-built for elevated surfaces.
