Crevasse Vase
Made by Alessi
Designed by Zaha Hadid
Zaha Hadid conceived the Crevasse as a study in controlled disruption. A single block of steel, scored along two diagonal axes, warps inward to create a surface that simultaneously recedes and expands. The gesture is architectural in origin, drawn from Hadid's lifelong preoccupation with the tension between natural force and constructed form.
The mirror-polish finish is not decorative but conceptual. It turns the vase into a reflective field, dissolving its edges into the surrounding environment and amplifying the sense of depth within the fold. Cold, precise, and quietly unsettling, the surface recalls the compressed luminosity of glacial ice.
- Formed from mirror-polished stainless steel
- Scored along two diagonal lines to produce an inverted, warped wall
- Designed to stand independently or group with other Crevasse vases to form continuous sculptural compositions
- Produced by Alessi in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Design
Grouped together, multiple Crevasse vases interlock into solid, continuous forms, a behavior that reflects Hadid's broader interest in parametric aggregation. Alone, the object asserts its own spatial presence with quiet authority.

Frequently Asked Questions
What material is the Alessi Crevasse Vase made from?
The Crevasse Vase is made from stainless steel finished to a mirror polish. The reflective surface is integral to the design concept, creating the illusion of depth within the folded form.
Can the Crevasse Vase hold water and fresh flowers?
Yes, the Crevasse Vase is functional as well as sculptural. Its steel construction makes it suitable for use with water and fresh-cut stems, though its narrow, angular profile is best suited to single stems or spare, architectural arrangements.
Who designed the Crevasse Vase for Alessi?
The Crevasse was designed by Zaha Hadid Design, the studio founded by the late architect Dame Zaha Hadid. It reflects her characteristic interest in fluid geometry, parametric form, and the intersection of natural and constructed forces.
How does the Crevasse Vase work when grouped with others?
Multiple Crevasse Vases are designed to be arranged together, where their scored and warped walls align to create continuous, solid sculptural compositions. This modular behavior is a direct expression of Hadid's interest in parametric aggregation.
Is the Crevasse Vase considered a collectible design object?
The Crevasse is widely regarded as a collectible piece within the Alessi catalog, produced in collaboration with one of the most significant architectural practices of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It is held in private collections and has been featured in design museum contexts internationally.
