CH33T Chair

Hans J. Wegner designed the CH33T in 1957 for Carl Hansen & Søn, and it remained in production for ten years before quietly disappearing from the catalog. When production resumed in 2012, the chair returned unchanged: no revisions, no reinterpretation. That fidelity says something about the precision of the original.

The chair's geometry is deliberate at every scale. Seat height, depth, and back angle were set by Wegner to distribute weight across the body without relying on padding. The curved backrest is pressed veneer, shaped to follow the lumbar region rather than impose a posture upon it. The dimensions throughout were drawn from the actual structural needs of the wood, not from convention.

Wegner's best work tends toward the same quality: a sense that the chair could not have been made any other way. The CH33T belongs to that group. Its light frame and compact footprint make it adaptable across contexts, but the design rewards close attention. The grain of the oak, the radius of the back curve, the taper of each leg - these are choices, not defaults.
