John Pawson conceived this bowl as a pure hemisphere, refusing any flat base that might interrupt the geometry's logic. The profile curves without compromise from rim to ground, and the bowl rests steadily only because it is filled with sand. That hidden ballast is a quiet act of wit: the object appears to defy its own stillness.
Bronze is among the oldest of casting materials, carrying associations of permanence, ritual, and weight. Pawson uses it here without nostalgia. The form is so reduced that the material becomes the entire subject, its surface warm and dense against the perfect arc of the silhouette.
The piece belongs to "5 Objects," the inaugural collection Pawson created for When Objects Work, the Belgian atelier founded on the conviction that a single, considered object can hold as much meaning as an entire room. Each work in the series takes a basic geometric container as its premise and asks what happens when craft and restraint share equal authority.
