Ariette Wall and Ceiling Lamp
Made by Flos
Designed by Tobia Scarpa
Tobia Scarpa conceived the Ariette as something suspended between object and atmosphere. Its form, drawn from the image of a kite adrift, reads differently depending on the light it holds and the surface it meets. Wall or ceiling, it adapts without compromise.
The diffuser is a tautly stretched synthetic fabric, thin enough to glow from within yet structured enough to maintain its geometric silhouette. That balance, between softness and precision, is the lamp's defining character. The light it produces is even and enveloping rather than directional or dramatic.
- Synthetic fabric diffuser for soft, even light distribution
- Fiberglass-reinforced polyamide fitting (30% glass fiber content)
- Suitable for wall or ceiling installation
- Designed by Tobia Scarpa for Flos
The ceiling fitting is cast in fiberglass-reinforced polyamide, chosen for its precision and longevity. The hardware recedes entirely so the form can speak on its own terms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who designed the Flos Ariette lamp?
The Ariette was designed by Tobia Scarpa, one of the most significant Italian designers of the twentieth century and the son of architect Carlo Scarpa. His work for Flos spans several decades and is characterized by formal restraint and material intelligence.
Can the Ariette be installed on both walls and ceilings?
Yes. The Ariette is engineered for both wall and ceiling installation without modification to its form or performance. Its geometry reads equally well in either orientation, which was a deliberate part of Scarpa's original design intent.
What material is the Ariette diffuser made from?
The diffuser is a tautly stretched synthetic fabric, thin enough to transmit a soft, even glow while retaining the lamp's precise geometric silhouette. This material choice gives the Ariette its characteristic quality of light.
What kind of light quality does the Ariette produce?
The Ariette produces a diffuse, enveloping light rather than a focused or directional beam. The stretched fabric diffuser distributes illumination evenly across its surface, making it well suited to spaces where ambient quality of light is prioritized over task lighting.
How does the Ariette fit within Tobia Scarpa's broader body of work?
Scarpa's design practice consistently explores the tension between structural discipline and sensory softness. The Ariette sits within a body of work that treats light as a material, shaping atmosphere through form rather than intensity.
