Rialto Modular Bookcase
Made by Cassina
Designed by Carlo Scarpa
Carlo Scarpa approached furniture as he approached buildings: through the precise choreography of structure, void, and material weight. The Rialto bookcase, originally conceived by the Venetian architect and reissued by Cassina, carries that sensibility into domestic space without apology.
Vertical spacers punctuate each module, doing double work as structural supports and compositional measures. They give the system its rhythm, turning what might otherwise be a neutral shelf unit into something closer to a wall drawn in wood.
A central block, available with drawers or painted shelves, interrupts the linear sequence and introduces both functional variation and visual pause. The open-pore or matt-varnished wood finishes preserve the grain's presence, keeping the surface honest to its material origin.
- Modular configuration adapts to varied spatial contexts
- Vertical spacers serve as both structure and compositional measure
- Central block with drawer or painted shelf options
- Available in open-pore and matt-varnished wood finishes
Scarpa's architecture of solids and voids is here translated at the scale of the shelf. Each arrangement is a considered composition, not merely a storage decision.
