Poul Kjærholm designed the PK22™ in 1956, evolving it from his PK25™ graduation project into a chair of greater structural sophistication. The split spring steel frame, finished by hand brushing, reads as a single continuous gesture, its low, open profile distributing weight with quiet authority across the floor.
Kjærholm belonged to a generation of Danish designers who studied both architecture and furniture making, and that dual discipline is visible in every line of the PK22™. Form is not decoration here. Each element of the frame carries structural purpose, and the proportions hold a tension between apparent lightness and physical presence that few chairs of the era resolved so cleanly.
This 2026 edition is upholstered in Haze leather, a velvety-soft hide with a matte finish that deepens in tone with use. Offered in dark brown, the leather develops a natural patina that changes the character of the chair gradually over years, rewarding close attention. Fritz Hansen has produced the PK22™ continuously since Kjærholm's death in 1980, maintaining the original construction standards and material quality he specified.
