Tadao Ando

Nato nel 1941 | Japan

Tadao Ando was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1941. Largely self-taught, he developed his architectural knowledge through extensive reading, travel, and direct study of buildings across Europe and the United States. In 1969, he established Tadao Ando Architect & Associates in Osaka, beginning a practice that would become internationally recognized for its use of exposed concrete, carefully controlled light, and spaces shaped around contemplation and connection with nature.

His major works include the Church of the Light, Church on the Water, Chichu Art Museum, and extensive projects on Naoshima, alongside cultural, residential, and commercial architecture around the world. Ando has also applied his architectural thinking to furniture, notably the Dream Chair for Carl Hansen & Søn, created as a tribute to Hans J. Wegner and shaped through sculptural plywood construction. He received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995, confirming his lasting influence on contemporary architecture and design.
