Fernando Mastrangelo

Nato nel 1978 | United States

Fernando Mastrangelo was born in 1978 and grew up in Mexico, an experience that strongly influenced his appreciation for monumental geometry, material expression, and the architecture of figures such as Luis Barragán and Ricardo Legorreta. He earned a BFA in Sculpture from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle in 2002 and an MFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2004. After working with artist Matthew Barney, he established Fernando Mastrangelo Studio in New York in 2006.

Mastrangelo moves between sculpture and functional design, casting furniture and artworks from materials including sand, salt, silica, crushed glass, cement, and stone. Collections such as Drift, Fade, Escape, and Ghost translate glaciers, geological formations, and natural landscapes into furniture with layered textures and nuanced gradients. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and he has created commissions for brands including Audemars Piguet, Stella McCartney, and Dior.
