Richard Woods was born in Chester, England, in 1966 and trained as a sculptor at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, architecture, furniture, and installation. He became known for large-scale interventions that cover walls, floors, facades, and interior structures with graphic patterns inspired by familiar elements of British design, including timber grain, brickwork, parquet, chintz, and mock Tudor architecture.
Working with traditional woodblock printing techniques, Woods transforms everyday surfaces into bold visual compositions shaped by saturated color, exaggerated pattern, and handcrafted detail. His work has been presented through commissions for Comme des Garcons, the London Underground, the Venice Biennale, and the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, and is held in collections including MoMA, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the British Museum. In 2007, he collaborated with Sebastian Wrong on the Wrongwoods collection for Established & Sons, combining expressive printed surfaces with precisely constructed plywood furniture.
