Andile Dyalvane

Nato nel 1978 | South Africa

Andile Dyalvane was born in 1978 in Ngobozana, near Qobo-Qobo in South Africa's Eastern Cape. Growing up on a farm and tending his father's cattle, he developed an enduring connection to the landscape and Xhosa traditions that continues to shape his work. He studied Art and Design at Sivuyile Technical College in Cape Town and completed a National Diploma in Ceramic Design at Port Elizabeth Technikon in 2003.

In 2005, Dyalvane co-founded Imiso Ceramics with Zizipho Poswa. His practice spans vessels, sculptural seating, and large-scale ceramic works, often using incised symbols and textured surfaces to explore ancestry, spirituality, memory, and community. His work is held in collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Vitra Design Museum, Design Museum Gent, and Iziko South African National Gallery. He received the Southern Guild Design Foundation Icon Award in 2015 and a Special Mention from the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize in 2022.

Clay is one of the mediums that help me connect with nature itself, like I'm touching a vast network of spirituality.
